Abdillahi Nur
Our Founder
Abdillahi Nur is a Somali entrepreneur with an MBA in Finance, based in the United States. As a father raising children in the West, he became deeply concerned that they, like many children in the diaspora, were losing connection to their native language and cultural heritage. Through personal experience, Abdillahi saw the widespread challenges Somali families face in preserving their language and heritage. He saw a recurring pattern: parents and children struggling to communicate, sometimes even relying on translators within their own homes. What concerned him even more was seeing parents spend large sums of money each year to send their children “back home” hoping they would quickly learn Somali and reconnect with their roots. Too often, they returned disappointed, realizing their children still could not speak the language. While fluent in Somali himself, he found that structured, accessible, and engaging learning resources were lacking, not just for his children, but for the wider community as well. Troubled by the growing generational disconnect, he was motivated by both personal conviction and a deep commitment to preserving the Somali identity. He understood that Somali is not just a language; it is a vital connection to culture, family, and faith. For many, learning Somali is also part of strengthening their Islamic values and understanding. In response, Abdillahi founded Af-Somali School, the first fully online Somali language school. His vision is to offer a high-quality, engaging, and flexible learning experience that empowers learners of all ages to reconnect with their language, their culture, and their faith, no matter where they live.
